    Skills for the job

    • Desire to learn local land use planning ordinances and state statues governing planning, public hearing and environmental decision-making processes.
    • Urban design concepts and theory, including architectural design.
    • Explain and apply policies, laws, administrative rules and codes.
    • Ability to coordinate, negotiate and resolve conflicting points of view and perform effective public outreach meetings and events.
    • Use computers, applications and software relevant to the field, including GIS and graphic design tools.
    • Ability to compile and analyze data.
    • Work primarily in an office setting while sitting at a computer or assisting customers at a counter.

    Education

    Options are available from the high school and GED-diploma level through college degrees, including an associate or bachelor's degree.
